RAG for enterprise: Building AI that answers from your internal data

RAG combines document retrieval with an LLM so AI answers from internal data, reducing hallucination and improving CS quality.

RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) combines document retrieval with a large language model so AI answers based on your enterprise's internal data instead of only its pretrained knowledge.

Why does enterprise need RAG? A vanilla LLM (like ChatGPT) has two big limitations:

  • It doesn't know your internal data (contracts, processes, products, policies)
  • It can hallucinate when it lacks information

RAG solves this by first retrieving relevant documents from your data store, then feeding them to the LLM as context to generate a grounded answer.

Practical RAG architecture

1. Ingestion

  • Split documents into chunks of 500-1000 tokens
  • Encode each chunk into an embedding vector (text-embedding-3, Cohere Embed, BGE-M3)
  • Store in a vector database (Qdrant, Milvus, pgvector, Pinecone)

2. Retrieval

  • The user question is encoded into a vector
  • Find the top-k most similar chunks (cosine similarity)
  • Optionally combine hybrid search (keyword + semantic) for better accuracy

3. Generation

  • Compose the question + retrieved chunks into a prompt
  • Send to an LLM (GPT-4o, Claude, Llama) to synthesize a cited answer

Real problems RAG solves well

  • CS chatbot answering from policies, FAQ, product catalog
  • Legal assistant looking up contract clauses
  • Internal search over ISO docs and operating procedures
  • Analysis of long technical documents

Measuring RAG quality

  • Faithfulness: is the answer consistent with retrieved context
  • Answer Relevance: does it actually answer the question
  • Context Precision/Recall: did retrieval find the right documents
  • Use the Ragas framework or an LLM-as-judge evaluation

Common implementation pitfalls

  • Scanned PDFs need high-quality OCR first
  • Chunks too large hurt accuracy, too small lose context
  • New documents must be re-indexed promptly
  • Access control: ensure users only retrieve documents they may see

Reference tech choices

  • Embeddings: OpenAI text-embedding-3-large, BGE-M3 (multilingual, good for Vietnamese)
  • Vector DB: Qdrant (self-host), pgvector (if already on Postgres), Pinecone (managed)
  • Framework: LangChain, LlamaIndex, or a minimal custom build

Conclusion: RAG is the most practical way to give enterprise AI an understanding of internal data without expensive fine-tuning. ROI typically lands in 2-4 months via faster lookup and higher CS quality.
